I oppose the actions taken by the Turner School District. Under no circumstances should a child be singled out for speaking a second language. I would understand if the teacher who overheard the comment noted it as being rude or offensive, but no justification of such manner was given. Army personnel use code or other languages at all times to defer intrusion of privacy, does that mean that our armed forces should be singled out and not allowed to operate in missions? I for one do not favor multiple languages due to the fact that translations are never exact however if the child can clearly speak English in the classroom and made a non-disruptive statement in Spanish on personal time, then there is no just cause for his persecution. The battle of English being the primary language in the United States has been fought over many years. Currently, Spanish is becoming a second language across the nation, and I believe it is only due to the fast increase of the Hispanic population and Hispanics becoming the lead minority do Anglo-Saxons feel threatened, as the previous lead minority, African-Americans, primarily spoke English, and no change was imminent in the near future.
